It's time for a Maya Papaya Mini Book Review!

The Graveyard Book
By Neil Gaiman

A wonderful mix-up of The Jungle Book meets classic fairytale meets The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Neil Gaiman has a way of slithering into your soul and intensifying the atmosphere and tone of the written word. He’s a master storyteller, and a weaver of the fantastic. I could see and picture main character Nobody Owens and his pale blue and gray world. The characters are nothing short of amazing. My favorite being Silas, the unworldly, ever calm, smooth guardian. But other favorites include almost every character in the novel, like Liza, the ghouls, Miss Lupescu, and Nehemiah Trot. Every character is unique and comes to life within a few short sentences. With a bittersweet ending (but those are the best, for the happiest of joys sprout from knowing heartache and change) and a admirable, courageous main character, The Graveyard Book has quickly pushed its way onto my top favorites booklist.

This novel is the winner of the 2009 Newberry Award.

It's time for a Maya Papaya Mini Book Review!

The Anatomy of Motive
by John Douglas and Mark Olshaker

Intriguing and Horrifying.

This is the first true crime book I’ve ever read. And now, I can’t wait to read another one. Written by the most famous FBI agent, John Douglas (the inspiration for the detectives of Silence of the Lambs), his storytelling prose sets it apart from most non-fiction books. I was drawn in and morbidly fascinated by what goes into the makings of a killer and the quest to answer the most important question – Why did he do it? It really was a page turner. Douglas takes the reader through the hunt for infamous criminals and murderers like Timothy McVeigh, the Unabomber, and Andrew Cunanan (who shockingly has inspired a musical on his life!) I would recommend this one to fans of cop shows, law and order, or programs of the CSI variety.

8/10 It’s a great read, and you learn so many concepts about the criminal mind I would have never thought about. It’s just not my favorite type of literature to read, hence the nearly perfect score.

Race Bending

So I find myself in a dilemma.

I am a huge fan of the animated series “Avatar the Last Airbender” I own all the seasons, I draw fan art, wrote some fan fiction, was on the show’s online message boards, etc.

I was excited to hear that the movie is coming out next year. I like M. Night Shyamalan’s films, I really do. And now that he’s directing “The Last Airbender” it made me doubly excited. Until the casting started. Now the show consists of a world based on Asian tradition, mythology and culture. All the characters are either Asian or Inuit influenced. And yet, for the movie, almost all the main characters are White. At first I was a little bummed out about it. And then as time went on and I heard other people’s opinions and I thought about it more, I find the casting amiss and perhaps even unethical.

I can never voice my thoughts on issues very well, so I won’t spend too long explaining and going into depth. But Asians in the media have been overlooked time and time again. If Avatar had been an African influenced show with Black children, I very much doubt that the cast would have been all white. Some people may not think it’s a very big deal, but it actually is! Can you name (by their actual names – not characters) five Asian actors off the top of your head?

Back to my dilemma, I really really want to see the movie because I am such a big fan of the show. But is it worth it if I really want to see change? Because change won’t happen if people just let things slide by. Kids are influenced immensely by the media, and I know that every little girl has wondered at least once at some point in her life why she isn’t like the beautiful white blond skinny Barbie doll people we see on television. Being half Asian myself, I know I felt those things, There were no cool Asian characters that looked like me when I was a kid. I hope that this can change for my future children.

Hello there! I am a college graduate! Yippee! Wow, it feels good to never have to do homework ever again. Ever again! And yet sometimes, I'm still haunted by school, like last night I was anxious that I had something due tomorrow. But nope! No homework for me!

It has been like two years since I've updated this blog. So let me tell you what's going on with me! I suppose I have an addiction to explanation points for starters! I live in Provo, UT in a little brick house, in a little room made entirely of wood. It feels like I'm under the sea, and I live in a ship's quarters. I work a dinky student's job for BYU broadcasting. I haven't seen my boss in about a month and I have no co-workers. In fact I am typing this right now while I am at work. I have no idea where I'll be five months.

I have a mom, dad, little sister and a dog that live in Fairfax, VA. I have a brother on a mission in Portland, OR.

I'm pretty awesome, but pretty dorky, too. Goodness, I can be awkward. I'm trying to practice drawing more often, and a little painting to get better at art. I'm also attempting to write a young adult's fantasy / sci-fi novel. I'm about half way done with the first draft.

Yes! That is the wonderfulness that is me! I will be posting awesomeness very very soon.

The past weekend I went up to Temple Square at Salt Lake City.

We got to see the Joseph Smith Movie, which was wonderful. The guy who played Joseph had the profile, that was awesome. I really enjoyed the Emma aspect of the story, reminds us how much pain they actaully went through. The only thing I had a problem with was the antagonists. They just seemed so exagerrated. Oh well, maybe they really were.

Well the Temple was beautiful. They had put up the Christmas lights, although not as many as the Washington DC temple. But it was freezing!

General Conference

I have to tell you all about my amazing day. It was General Conference! Yes! I must say that I have added General Conference to “my absolute favorite times of the year” list. I really really loved it.

Well, you’ll never believe it but I willed myself to get out of bed and get ready to go by 7am. A group of 5 of us car pooled to Salt Lake City. It took shorter this time then it did with the shuttle, so we got there in about 40 minutes.

Salt Lake City! Yay! I whipped out my camera and took a lot of shots. “Ack! Temple! So pretty! Must take 100 photos” Yes, I’m crazy. And I’m such a nerd, I get too excited about stuff.

But the temple was gorgeous, sublime, and majestic. I hadn’t seen it since I was 9 so I was thrilled.

Even though we got there more than an hour early, the line for the conference was already freaking long, looped all around temple square. So we stood in line for and hour and a half, and sadly didn’t get in. So we shuffled over to the Joseph Smith building which was right there and watched the first session in one of the rooms. That building is freaking beautiful inside! The carpets and the gigantic shimmering chandeliers, I wanted to take photos but we didn’t have time.

In between sessions we ate lunch at the mall. And it was awesome!! Haha, not the lunch, but the event they were having at Deseret Books. Dozens of Mormon authors were there and different Mormon bands. (This was the only part that sucked though - I don’t like being mean but the girls I was with showed no enthusiasm for this!! I mean - what the heck?? It’s sooo cool! Or am I just crazy? So while they ate lunch, I excused myself and went to look around, take a few pics, listen to some music)

Afternoon Session!! Wahoo!! MY FAVORITE part of the day! We had to run around in the rain, goodness I got wet (no umbrella) and made it in (cause we had tickets for this one! Yay!) The conference center is gigantic!! Wowza! We sat in the balcony.

We were all seated and when the Prophet came in the entire audience stood up.

.
And in those few seconds when he walked across that stage, while the thousands of people were silent, I was in complete and utter awe for the first time in my life. I have never felt the spirit so strongly. Ever. It was just magnificent. I almost cried. I’m crying now as I type this. There’s just no way I can explain the feeling I had when he walked in the room. It was just so phenomenal. It was like the Holy Ghost was testifying to me that Gordon B. Hinckley is truly a Prophet of God.

I can’t tell you how much I loved that moment and the session that followed it. I enjoyed the talks immensely for the first time, I’m ashamed to admit, but I’ve never really tried to seriously focus and pay attention to the speakers. The music that vibrated within that room was beautiful, and I enjoyed every single moment. Oh! How I wish I could attend tomorrow’s sessions! I’m going to try and make it a goal of trying to attend conference in person as often as I can and I would recommend to everyone as well.

I loved today.

Whew! It’s been a long time since I updated. So, today you get random thoughts!

*It’s so weird to see snow covered mountains, a snow covered ground, people in t-shirts, and seagulls all at the same time

*Why are their so many bike riders here at BYU? I never saw anyone ride a bike at GMU. But here it’s like for every 15 people, there’s a biker. And I get so scared of them! Why do they go so fast in a high pedestrian area? It’s amazing that I haven’t seen any crashes yet. And of course, I seem to be the only one who awkwardly dashes to the side when I see one coming, while people just continue walking and bike easily swerves around them. Odd looks galore.

*Gee, I really miss Virginia trees. And forests. And anything that looks remotely green

*Dude, I could so imagine spider man sitting on top of one of those rooftops.

*Is it just me, or does everyone else get lost every twenty minutes, too?

*Man, I haven’t driven a car in three months.

*Man, I haven’t ridden in a car for over two months.

*Mail makes me happy

*Why does the Morris center go all out on decorations, only to have their food be mediocre? Seriously, you should have seen their “Dead Man’s Chest” weekend, phenomenal stuff, I should have taken a picture.

Agh...I'm getting worse... :(

No, you're not!! I really like the car one, that's really cool. The animal one is good too, but did you create the layout, or did you have a refrence? And I can see halos around the penguins and the cat's mouth, you might want to go back and smooth that out.

But the car one looks really good. I like the style of the text, the colors, and the pictures you choose. The speed lines are very stylistic. I really like on both magazines the font and style you chose for the title.

This is the view from my window, although, it didn't look so reflective to me. If you could see past that you could see guys playing basketball down below. Nowhere as cool as the views that the girls get of Provo and the Temple. Raspberry on them.

And here are some more mountains. If you look closely you can see houses up around the base. Those light up at night and it looks like those minature christmas house sets.

And more mountains....

And turn around and you have snow covered mountains! plus the Bell Tower, which plays hymns every hour, it's pretty close to Deseret Towers. And music majors are the ones playing the hymns! Isn't that awesome! You can hear them all around campus and that's when you know you're late for class.

This is a mural on the windows of a dorm from across the street. The guy who does these is incredible, he does a new one every month, and I get to pass it every day.

Alrighty guys and dolls, here’s the latest update on me! Yay!

It’s snowing outside right now, and it snowed another 3 inches last night, on top of the bogo amount of snow we had earlier this week. Beautiful, but nasty to walk to church and class in.

School’s goin alright. I’m diggin my classes, even if they are general ed’s really. I had to watch ‘Lady for a Day’ for my intro to film class, yes, it rocked.

I went with some girls to go watch a night of Jane Austen: Sense and Sensibility (very cute movie!) And Persuasion. Dude, that movie was so heavily influenced by the 70s styles and fashions - weird. And the main actress was missing half of her eyebrow? Wonky.

In Remembrance: Jonathan Kent

What a magnificent character. I, among millions of other fans were incredibly saddened to see Jonathan’s character die during last week’s Smallville episode, Reckoning. He will be missed.

He was the most dignified, moral, courageous character, who kept his family going strong from one week to the next. Jonathan Schneider, you gave the show realism, and grace, and support. I as a viewer felt less anxious for the other characters when you were around. It was heartbreaking to see Martha and Clark try to recuperate from your death. There was no better man on the show than you.

This is not my buidling (mine's two buildings over) but it looks exactly like my beloved "S" hall. Or what I like to call it: Smallville Hall, Superman Hall, Spider-man Hall, or plain ol' Superhero Hall. Am I scaring any of you? Well, anyways, there go those mountains again.

Haha so, Jon Heder (aka Napolean Dynamite) graduated from the BYU media arts program, which is what I'm trying to desperately get into right now.

During my new student orientation - we watched a video about transfering to BYU, and Jon Heder was the main character- it was made a while ago. But still good for laughs.

And then the principle from the movie is one of the advisers here at the media arts lab. Purty Cool.

Hidden may be my favorite episode of Smallville, ever.

Here's what happens:

Clark is mortal (Without powers) and he and Lana are finally a couple. The villain of the episode is a guy trying to destroy Smallville with a missile because of the meteor freaks that live within the town. He shoots Clark after he and Chloe try to trick him. Clark is rushed to the hospital where - he dies. Lana and the Kents can't believe it and cry so heartbreakingly, that it makes the viewer cry with them.

Then, just as the missile is set off, Clark's body disappears. He wakes up in the FOS (fortress of solitude) to find Lionel. But he isn’t Lionel - he’s Jor-El, taking over Lionel’s body. He tells Clark that he’s been brought back to life, but with consequences. Someone close to Clark will have to die.

Clark, now restored with all his powers, rushes toward the missile and super-jumps aboard. He’s lifted up into space and dismantles it above the earth’s atmosphere. Wow. Awesome. I loved that scene.

Ah, but now, perhaps an even better scene: The breathtakingly beautiful reunion scene between Lana and Clark. Their passion for one another is clearly evident, better than tell you, let me show you with this:

One Week

Well, it's been one week since I arrived in Utah, and my oh my, what a change.

Apart from the majestic beauty of the Rocky Mountains, and the ever so close clouds, the school is vastly different to what I'm used to as well.

BYU is a church school, and so I don't know why I was surprised to find out that many classes begin with a prayer and sometime a hymn. And so far all of my classes have somehow brought the gospel into the lessons.

Many of the classes are also based on the honor system. You write down on the roll whether or not you completed your homework, the teachers do not check.

Also, I have to do a lot of community service for at least three classes.

I'm gonna post some pics soon! I took some already :)

Smallville Fan Fiction

Howdy all!

Well, as most of you know, I'm a huge Smallville / Clana fan. And, yes I dig fan fiction. I myself have written two. If you wanna check them out, click the links below. And I'd love it if you left me comments, but you'd have to make a screen name to do that :P

My first fic: Apogee
It's about Clark and Lana finally putting everything together and coming to a point (an apogee!) where life becomes much better (even if it gets worse first) I wrote it out of the need to abolish the Isobel / Stones / Teague storyline that the show had. It's not too bad if I say so myself, but remember it was my first fic, so go easy on it.

My second fic: Martha
It revolves all around the life of Martha (Superman's Mommy), at the time when Clark and Lana are seven years old. It was fun to write, and it's much more polished than the other one, so check it out!

My third fic: The Golden Door
Coming Soon!
It's about a Kryptonian Door that allows Clark and Lana to leap from life to life, facing obstacles along the way, while trying to get back home.

Hello all!

Well, I just got in yesterday and I've set up my dorm room. I'm here at Brigham Young University! (located in Provo, Utah)

And my goodness!! The peeps here are too nice! I sound pretty excited, but no one was hyper, so don't have that impression. Some fellow traveler offered to help me drag my bags all the way to the Morris Center, wherever you are mysterious dude (I don't know your name)thank you!

Then the people behind the desk at the Morris Center were super friendly! Two of them helped me take all my junk up to my dorm. Heather and Katherine = Sweethearts! And then Katherine said she would take me to go buy a pillow, and we went on a mini tour of the closest shopping area. She also took me to the Pita Pit. They make a good pita. :) Thank you so much girls!

Most of you know I'm pretty shy, especially with new people, so I'm thankful for the kindess I've recieved.

I'm working on setting up my digital camera, so look for photos soon!
